I live in the Waikato and like most Kiwi’s, I felt the earthquake that occurred two minutes after midnight on 14 November 2016. I can only imagine how traumatic it must have been for those living closer to the epicentre and during the following days as I watched images unfold of the devastating effects it had caused, decided to create an artwork to raise funds for those affected.
One positive piece of news that came in the aftermath was when the sea life returned to the local waters, and this gave me the idea of incorporating the whales tails into the ranges and the seals amongst the rocks.
The fact that the whales and seals had returned gave hope, and serves as a reminder of the Kiwi spirit - and the spirit of Kaikoura - ‘Wairua o Kaikoura’. The original painting was auctioned with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal.
