Mt Karioi in the Waikato is often referred to as the sleeping lady. According to Maori legend the Karioi was a jilted Maori Princess who, upon discovering that love was lost, lay down and rests.
Karioi overlooks the local west coast township of Raglan with its grey iron sand beaches, which is world-famous for its long left-hand surf break. The curves of the 'left hand' waves in the painting are based on the Fibonacci numbers, also known as the ‘golden mean’ – the spiral curve present in many naturally occurring forms such as shells and flowers.
