When creating landscapes I like to integrate other elements which remain somewhat hidden within the painting. Some of my recent works have included a female form as the suggested outline of the mountain, loosely based on Mt. Karioi being known as ‘the sleeping lady’. (According to Maori legend the Karioi was a jilted Maori Princess who, upon discovering that love was lost, lay down and rests.)
With this piece I took it a step further, weaving female shapes throughout the landscape - from the dark grey iron sand beach and dry dunes, across the rolling farmland to the mountain beyond. When viewed from a different perspective a second picture is created, the three female figures moving away from the observer, blending into the distant scenery and becoming less apparent. This print can be displayed from either of the two different angles depending on whether a traditional or more modern aesthetic is preferred.
