This painting depicts Mt Pirongia and the Waipa River winding its way through the farmland. There are variations of the legend of the Maori ancestress Kahu - this work is based on Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu, the ‘fragrant presence of Kahu’. Kahu was the wife of Rakataura, the Tainui tohunga or high priest, and is shown here unadorned - the unfurling koru, her dreams.
